Certainly, you heard about Cinderella story, a beautiful girl who lives with her cruel stepmother and her jealous & ugly stepsisters. (Cinderalla; Disney Princess)
So far, many movies and animations have been made produced inspired by this Disney story. The most famous characters in the story are Cinderella, Lady Tremaine as the stepmother, Fairy Godmother, and Prince Charming.
Now I don’t want to tell Cinderella’s story! I want to talk about a deconstructive and fashion icon actor who is playing the role of Fairy Godmother in Cinderella’s latest film; Billy Porter. It’s fair to change the role to a genderless fairy godparent!
Billy Porter (born September 21, 1969) is an American actor, singer, and style icon. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama and achieved fame performing on Broadway before starting a solo career as a singer and actor.
Billy Porter is best known for her feminine styles. It is better to say women’s clothes sometimes are designed by combining men’s clothes especially for him. He believes clothing has no gender. So, we always see him heating up the red carpets with his colorful & high-diverse styles.
One of the famous Billy Porter’s styles was velvet tuxedo gown on the Oscars red carpet,2019, designed by Christian Siriano.
For the actor and singer, the fashion choice was deeply personal. Below, Porter reflects on coming to terms with his queer identity and how his fashion choices have become a powerful tool for self-expression and representation.
“I’ve always been inspired by fashion. My grandmother, my mom—they were always stylish. I grew up loving fashion, but there was a limit to the ways in which I could express myself. When you’re black and you’re gay, one’s masculinity is in question. I dealt with a lot of homophobias in relation to my clothing choices. when I had my first working contract at A&M Records, I was silent for a long time. I was trying to fit into what other people felt I should look like. When I landed a role in Kinky Boots, the experience really grounded me in a way that was so unexpected. Putting on those heels made me feel the most masculine I’ve ever felt in my life. It was empowering to let that part of myself free.”
He goes on to talk about his inner feelings when challenging masculine styles on the red carpets:
“Now I’m in a space where, being on Pose, I’m invited to red carpets and I have something to say through clothes. My goal is to be a walking piece of political art every time I show up. To challenge expectations. What is masculinity? What does that mean? Women show up every day in pants, but the minute a man wears a dress, the seas part. It happened to me at the Golden Globes. I wore a pink cape, and I was like, really? Y’all trippin’? I stopped traffic! That Globes outfit changed everything for me. I had the courage to push the status quo. I believe men on the red carpet would love to play more. This industry masquerades itself as inclusive, but actors are afraid to play, because if they show up as something outside of the status quo, they might be received as feminine, and, as a result, they won’t get that masculine job, that superhero job. And that’s the truth. I’ve been confronted with that.”
The Golden Globe that he mentioned is related to 2019 when the ‘Pose’ star wore a gray embroidered suit and pink cape designed by couture fashion designer Randi Rahm.
What’s up With Cinderella?
And now he is playing as the Fairy Godparent in a modern musical version of the classic fairy tale “Cinderella”, written and directed by Kay Cannon from a screen story by James Corden. Recently the Columbia Pictures, as the production company, release some pictures & a short trailer of this newest Cinderella.
It seems that the latest Cinderella-inspired story, like Billy Porter’s style, is going to be progressive. Because the characters in this Cinderella have a very different look from Disney’s characters for our childhood.
Camila Cabello as Cinderella, Idina Menzel as Vivian, Cinderella’s stepmother, and Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Robert are the other casts in Cinderella movies (2021).
