For hosting a perfect talk show Many have tried. But Few have succeeded. Many have had this popular job, great women and men who took on the responsibility with the gravity that it deserved.
But Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres are different. With countless fans, they are two of the most successful and well_known talk show hosts in the history of television. They have a lot in common but given it’s January and they were both born this month here we are going to compare their career and their paths to success which have been quite different!
Two Different Beginnings
While 63 years old comedian, author, talk show host, and producer Ellen grew up in New Orleans, Oprah was born to a single teenage mother into poverty in rural Mississippi. Ellen’s father was an insurance salesman and her mother was a real state agent. Growing up, DeGeneres dreamed of becoming a veterinarian, but she gave up the idea because she was “not book smart.” Instead, she waited tables, sold vacuum cleaners, painted houses, and worked as a legal secretary. She finally began performing in 1981, bolstered by her mother’s moral and financial support. In 1997, she came out as gay and became a staunch advocate of LGBTQ rights.
The 67 years old TV host, Oprah was raised in inner-city Milwaukee. She has stated that she was molested during her childhood and early teenage years and became pregnant at 14, her son was born prematurely and died in infancy. Such a sad story! In 1971 entered Tennessee State University and then began working in radio and television broadcasting in Nashville.
Different But Glorious Path of Success by Overcoming the Minority
In 2003, Ellen with her new talk show ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ became a big hit with daytime viewers with her self-titled talk show, Ellen. Since its inception, the show has won a slew of awards, including 64 Daytime Emmys for a daytime talk show. In May 2021, DeGeneres announced she’ll be ending her talk show in 2022.
Winfrey launched The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1986 as a nationally syndicated program that ran for 25 years, until 2011. She soon gained ownership of the program from ABC, drawing it under the control of her new production company, Harpo Productions (‘Oprah’ spelled backward), and making more and more money from syndication.
When It Comes to Style, It is all About Charming Signature Suiting
With no doubt both Elle and Oprah are stylish but in different ways. Except for suits! From red carpets, to hosting a show Ellen’s choice always would be a chic suit. DeGeneres also launched her new commerce site, Ed by Ellen. Pronounced “Ed,” the brand covers everything from clothing and accessories to barware and throw pillows. Ellen is already a comedian, author, talk show host, and producer. Now she can add lifestyle and style brand maven to the list.
On the other hand, it seems Oprah always sticks with a classic way of dress code. Looking back to her style, long dresses, fancy hats, minidresses, and suits are her favorites as well. Speaking of favorite things, As part of her annual tradition, she has released a comprehensive list of her Favorite Things includes gift ideas for foodies, techies, travelers, and more. Oprah’s Favorite Things, which began in 2002 as a giveaway on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” is now practically a holiday tradition, with millions of fans waiting to see the products, services, and experiences that make the list. The list has also been a cultural barometer of sorts, revealing the most popular trends from the past 12 months.
Incomes and Net Worth, Opera Winfrey is Worth $2.7 Billion!
Ellen is worth an estimated $105 million. Her income comes from the combination of Ellen’s production company, record label, book sales, which total around $50 million. Ellen’s annual salary from just her talk show is around $45 million.
Now it is Winfrey’s turn, Oprah is worth $2.7 billion and is the richest self-made billionaire woman in the world! I must say this number truly left me speechless! She made more than any TV star in history for her talk show, making $315 million per year from her shoo alone. She launched The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1986 as a nationally syndicated program that ran for 25 years, until 2011. With its placement on 120 channels and an audience of 10 million people, the show grossed $125 million by the end of its first year, of which Winfrey received $30 million.
The True Definition of Home Sweet Home, from Ellen De Generes’ Mansion to Oprah’s Private Jet!
When it comes to millionaires and billionaires, there will be no limit on spending money! For a better life, in 2008 Ellen and her wife Portia De Rossi bought Brad Pitt’s Malibu mansion for $13 million, plus owns more than 20 properties. She also rides a Porsche 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition, worth $160,000.
The true definition of home sweet home is here! Oprah owns a mansion in Montecito, California that she purchased in 2001 for $50 million. For traveling, she spent $47 million on her private jet. Which I think is a really big deal!
Awards and Honors
Both Ellen and Oprah have won the People’s Choice Awards for favorite talk show host. Both overcame their minority status to become two of the most successful women on television. They now both are the best.
Oprah with her fighting background, after years of toils, finally has gotten what she deserved, well deserved! She has won various awards like the People’s Choice Awards and Golden Globes.
On the other hand, Ellen was awarded the Medal of Freedom, the highest honor bestowed by former president Barack Obama to a US civilian, for her instrumental bravery and influence in advancing LGBT rights. I think we must treasure the fact how much courage was required for Ellen to come out on the most public of stages almost 20 years ago. It is remarkable!
